Regardless if a person is a seasoned veteran martial arts practitioner or just starting out, we all have something to learn or improve in speed, power, structure, timing, physical and emotional control, stamina, flexibility and many other areas. That’s where I hope to help.
My life in martial arts
I started learning martial arts at the ripe old age of eight (8) years old. My first system was Southern Preying Mantis Kungfu and I practiced diligently for two years until tragedy struck. I broke my back while playing in my neighborhood. I worked the following four (4) years in recovery, but martial arts was already in my blood even though I could no longer perform the techniques.
So, I studied everything I could in the realms of strategy, tactics, physics, biology, physiology and kinetic sciences. I read writings from every martial master I could find: Sun Tsu, Miyamoto Musashi, Morihei Ueshiba, Lao Tsu, Mahatma Gandhi and many more. I could not get enough.
After I was back on my feet, I sought every available martial system dealing with self-protection I could find. This was before the Internet, so my options were limited, but I did my best. At age 18, I joined the US Army where I was put in positions that tested my skills in real life situations. I returned to civilian life unharmed, but not unchanged by my experiences.
That is when I realized I made some crucial mistakes both when I was serving and in private practice. I was still trying to force the power and speed out and not allowing my body to move as it was designed. I worked the next twenty-five (25) years dissecting, evaluating and restructuring the way I perform my martial arts for the defense and protection of myself, my family and anyone else who is unable to do so for themselves.
During the restructuring process, I not only learn a LOT about martial systems. I learned quite a bit about myself, life and how the two can integrate. My life as a whole has been made better by the practice of martial arts.
Now it’s time to give back.
Technique vs Principle
Over the course of my almost 40 years of training, I have seen martial artists from many systems and purposes pour their hearts and souls into their training. One common factor I have found – from being involved in forums and in personal contact with other practitioners – is the question of which system is better for a particular set of circumstances.
This tells me that too many people are more concerned with the “what to do” than the “how to do it properly” or the “why to use it in the first place”. I decided it was time to share what I have found through almost 40 years of training in hopes of helping my fellow practitioners improve their personal security, effectiveness in battlefield combat, performance in the ring or simply the quality of their demonstrations.
Improving martial effectiveness
It is the goal of this site to help the martial artist – regardless of chosen system or category of usage – improve speed, stamina, power, balance or any number of aspects that go into being an effect and proficient martial artist. To that end, we provide access to training from some world’s best instructors and the tools a practitioner would use to accomplish desired goals.
